Preoperative anaemia is a worldwide problem. We know that anaemia negatively affects the outcome of our patients. How frequent is the problem? What are the causes? You can help the ALICE researchers recruit centres to the ALICE study, which aims to find some answers to these questions.
The trial is not complicated: Screening your patients for the presence and cause of anaemia within a self-selected week. The results can be used to design supplementation strategies for iron, vitamin B12 and/or folate deficiency prior to surgery.
The WFSA Committee for Scientific Affairs has gone through the protocol and given it its full support. I hope that all of you will distribute the invitation, and that many of your country’s institutions see this as an opportunity to collaborate globally to help future patients.
Below and attached is the invitation from the researchers.
“The ALICE Study, initiated by Prof. Dr. Kai Zacharowski and Prof. Dr. Patrick Meybohm, is currently recruiting centres all over the world. The main goal of the study is to evaluate prevalence and causes of preoperative anaemia in major surgical patients. If you are interested in joining the study please contact the study coordinators at:ALICE@kgu.de. Get involved today!”
